Since the 17th Century a defining characteristic for Cuba is the Afro Cuban religious tradition of Santeria, which has impacted nearly all of Cuban’s society.  A person who practices the Afro Cuban religious tradition is initiated by the protection of a Godparent.  A Godparent has extensive knowledge of the religion and is a godchild’s guide into the religion and practices.  A Godparent is particularly important as they are custodians of ache, meaning life force.  A philosophical concept originated from Yoruba in West Africa and migrated to Cuba.
